I am the Women's Ministry team coordinator for the Kingborough Reformed Churches. When people ask me what I do it is hard to answer succinctly. When my non-Christian friends ask me about my role and I answer them they think it is great that the church is looking out for the women (more power to you, girlfriend and that kind of thing!)
But it's not simply 'looking out' for the women, is it? This is how I described Women's ministry at a recent congregational meeting:
Women's ministry exists to build up the church, it is not a separate group among the many groups within the church. One of it's main purposes is to equip the women of all the churches for their roles wherever they may be.
Gender based ministry (what I mean by that is, highlighting ministry for women) is commended in the Scriptures. Titus Chapter 2 indicates that women are called upon to minister to each other. In particular older women are expected to train younger women in areas of personal godliness.
Both men and women are called to be filled with the knowledge of God and to be willing to serve Christ in any way, there are no differences here, however men and women do work differently and Christian women need training in particular skills, so that is where our team comes in!
Upon reading it again I don't like the word 'skills'. But...
Any other thoughts? Oh and by the way the team and I have started our own blog - I have never done this before and hope to post up the link for you
